Stay Inside! Unhealthy Air in Mid Atlantic

Due to the wildfires in Canada, we in the Mid-Atlantic are experiencing very poor air quality from June 6. The poor air quality is expected to last until June 14 and possibly longer.

Poor air quality is especially a problem for people with lung conditions like asthma and COPD.

BUT it is also a concern for everybody! The soot (PM2.5 fine particulate pollution) is deadly! It is a major cause of heart disease, stroke, cancers, and even dementia.

Delaware usually has unhealthy levels of soot, and we suffer high rates of these diseases as a result. Why? Because we all live close to major roadways, which are a major source of PM2.5. Also we live downwind from coal fired power plants and other fossil fuel burning.

The solution is to stay indoors during these times of poor air quality!

You can follow our local air quality at airnow.gov

Important question - why do we have these wildfires? It’s impossible to say, but climate change is a likely contributor. We need to stop burning stuff!

What is a nutritional antidote to air pollution / PM2.5? Broccoli! See https://nutritionfacts.org/video/best-food-to-counter-the-effects-of-air-pollution/
